Call me Dr. Doolittle!

I'd recommend rats as well. They're very gentle and curious...in fact, they don't bite or scratch like hamsters or other small animals. They're also extremely intelligent and trainable (why do you think labs use them?). If you don't like the tail, or if cleaning cedar lining isn't your thing, try a lizard. Much less upkeep. Be careful, though, since some lizards require just-right humidity and temperatures. Leopard geckos are wonderful--you don't have to worry about keeping the tank humid and they're very hardy. A 10-gallon aquarium, some sand, a shallow dish of water, an under-tank heating pad, and crickets galore--watch out though. Leopard geckos tend to live 20 years! :-)
