All About Me
By Sharon

Clip to ScrapBook
A great theme for 2nd and 3rd graders is an all about me theme! I begin the year reading two books by Judy Blume: Freckle Juice and The One In The Middle is a Green Kangaroo. Both books center around fostering self esteem,
it is ok to be the you who you are. I have students use file folders to create recipes for themselves along with a picture taken by me. The top says: Recipe For "Susie" and lists ingredients and the bottom is directions.(this activity works well with Freckle Juice because of a recipe in the story) Also, I send a homework sheet home titled Math in My World. I list numbers to fill in
such as birthday, house number, birth weight, and have them provide the information. I have them think of 2 or 3 on their own. We use this information to create a math poster (a large piece of construction paper divided into squares with a picture of the student in the middle. These are nice for open house as well. I also read a book called The Important Book. I have students list 4 or 5 important things about themselves and write a paragraph. On the first day of school I read The Rainbow Fish and then give each child a scale to put on an enlarged fish. They write something special about themselves on the scale.
