AR store By Lisa

I have been teaching with AR for the last 3 years and it has been a valuable addition to my reading program. We also operate a store to reward students for earning points. Because I wasn't sure I liked that approach (but had no choice in the matter) I had students set goals and made AR worth a third of the reading grade. They were given 2 grades--one for meeting their goal (100% for meeting goal, 80% for meeting 80% of goal, etc.) and the other for the average percent correct on the tests. As it turned out, I loved the store...it was only once a month (administered by the PTA during lunch, so it | | was no hassle for me) and it gave the kids a reward for reading. The ones who loved to read would have read anyway, true. But the store didn't stop them from reading or from discussing literature. The ones who hated to read were motivated by the prizes and a couple discovered that they did like to read after all! My advice to you is this: If you have to participate, keep an open mind and be positive in front of your students. The benefits of the store might surprise you!
