Just curious

I'm researching on methods of discipline and I was curious--those of you who are against "paddling", what methods do you use for your own children at home? I live in the Southeast as well and paddling is still allowed in the schools. And just for information's sake, the reason people "get away" with it here is because it's not against the law and the parents support it. (one of the few things they do)Although I did not practice this at school, I do have to say that there is a HUGE difference in "paddling" at school and real physical abuse. I'm trying to research ways from effective schools who DO NOT use corporal punishment handle discipline...especially difficult cases. So please, any ideas would be great.
