reading strategies
By KT

Clip to ScrapBook
I agree with Mindy and the many important strategies that she listed above. Also, I firmly believe and research has repeatedly shown that reading for pleasure is directly related to reading success and helping kids to become
lifelong readers. I feel that in addition to reading "lessons" it is SO important for students to be read aloud to and also have an opportunity EVERY day consistently to read books of their own choice for 20-30 minutes. ( My 3rd graders were reading about 40 minutes by the end of the year.)
Kids sometimes enjoy doing related book projects, booktalks and reports related to these books,
but I do not feel it is necessary. It adds interest now and then and varies the routine. As adults we don't do reports on our pleasure reading...but we do enjoy sharing a good book with a friend. For management purposes, I would have the kids get their 2 books selected and on their desks ready to read before they went out to recess or a break to maximize the use of that time and to discourage those who take forever to find a book. Once the kids get the routine, I think you will find it time very well spent.
