4th grade ELA
By Martha

Clip to ScrapBook
I use the book called Daily Language Review for 4th grade. It is a great daily edit, grammar, reference skills, sentence structure, all encompassing program. I have do this every day for about 10-15 minutes. By the end
of the year they know and use a lot. I have them write the editing sentences in cursive to practice their handwriting too.
We do literature circles using good 4th grade literature such as books by Barbara Parks, James Howe, Patricia McLaughlin, Beverly Cleary, Elizabeth Winthrop, Lynn Reid Banks.
I have an extensive children's book library in my room that I have accumulated through
book clubs. The children self-select books to rad during SSR time. I conference with each child after they complete a book. I have a written book report that they do for me after each of these books. For writing, I give each child a daily writing calendar for each month. You can get a book of these for the grade level. The children have a writer's notebook that they write in each night based on a prompt I assign from the writing calendar. The children can share these the next morning if they choose and then I collect them and read them in my break time. I will often write comments in their notebooks to them. They really like this. I will sometimes have a child focus on somthing they need to work on in their next entry. The daily writing really improves their writing and makes them much more comfortable with the process. When I teach a style of writing or a mini lesson on a skill or concept we will sometimes use a writing from these notebooks to practice this skill. Let me know if you need more info. Good luck.
