My Opinion
By G.M.

Clip to ScrapBook
I taught fourth grade for 5 months last year.
The parents' club decided to give students prizes for reading AR books. Prize day was about every 5th week or so. The parents meant well; however,I disliked this idea very
much.

Throughout the weeks prior to when the prizes were to be given out, the students talked mostly about how many points they had accumalated and what prize they would be getting. RARELY did I hear about what they had read. The dicussions seemed to always revolve around what they were going to get for reading.

I think rewarding kids with prizes for reading is more detrimental than

it is beneficial. If I had my way, there would have been no prizes. There are other ways to get kids excited about reading. I know. I raised children who are now avid adult readers.
