slow readers
By Linda

Clip to ScrapBook
One activity that will help increase a student's 8
reading speed is one minute timed readings. 15
When done as a whole class activity, stress 23
that everyone is doing their personal best not 30
competing
with anyone else in the class. It 38
can be used as a workshop activity just by 47
having various reading sheets and a stop watch 55
available. I also use it at six week intervals 64
to chart reading fluency for all students. 71

The reading sheets are nothing more than the first three hundred words (about depending on the story) typed out but at the end

of each line there is a running word count (The way I set up the first part of the message). I make two copies of each story I am using with each unit. I lanimate them so that the students can write on them using the overhead pens. They mark missed words (/), ommitted words (o), self- corrections (sc), total words read, subtract the numbers of errors, which gives them the number of correct words read per minute. The children get quite good when testing each other. The students see this as "important fun."
