Early map reading skills are important for young children. Your students can start out by making a map of the classroom, playground, or school. Tour each area as students pictorially represent them. Provide students with simple handmade maps to interpret. For example, map out the library or lunch room or writing center. Help students to read a key to a map by using a rectangle for a door or a different color for each area. Get parents involved by helping their child to map their room, house, or route to school. For free time, provide students with fun mazes to complete to reinforce map reading.
