balloons
By Stephanie

Clip to ScrapBook
Bunches of ballons are a good way to teach estimation. Provide bunches in various quantities(small and large numbers). Students can estimate the number without counting. Turn it into a game and give a balloon to the students
who comes closest. Let the air out of ballons and measure how far they go. Give each student a package of unfilled balloons and have them sort by color, size, or number. Make a Venn diagram or graph by the color, number each student has. For science, each student can fill the ballons with various substances like water, shaving cream, salt, etc. Make a hypothesis about the rates
at which the balloons will fall. Supervise students on a ladder as they try the experiment. for language arts, write stories about what happens as when a balloon is let go outside-where does it go or who will find it or what might the balloon see in the community(social studies). As a closing activity, let the balloons go with a return postcard attached. See how many postcards come back with written responses.
