Some ideas

Yes! You will be ready. I would start by planning procedures for your class. Be sure you know what you want the students to do and how you want them to do it. Decide on basic rules, how to sharpen pencils, what to do with
papers, how to line up, where to put their things, etc... Read Harry Wong's book, The First Days of School, for great ideas in being prepared. I read it every summer to help refresh my memory.

If you have seen your room, you could begin planning the physical aspects. Bulletin Boards, desk arrangements etc... You may select a back to school theme. Here are a few I have used over

the years:
"Hopping into First Grade"-Frog theme
"Mrs.________ Busy Bees"- Bee/insect theme
"School is out of this World"- Space theme
"We're Nuts about School"
"Take a bite out of School" Apple Theme
"A Beary Special Year"- Bear Theme

There are many other ideas on this and other boards at this site.

When you get your curriculum on the 16th, you will have some of your planning done. Then you can concentrate on subject matter.

I found these books helpful when teaching first grade:

Month by Month Phonics for First Grade
The First Grade Super Book
Alternatives to Worksheets
Teaching Cheap

Good luck and don't stress! Everything will come together.

Chris
