war with grandpa
By kimberly

Clip to ScrapBook
I has a group (4th grade) read this at the end of the year. When they finished the book each student in the group had to build a model of Grandpa Jack's basement apartment. They could use any materials they wanted. The
only criteria was I had to be able to identify the details mentioned in the book. The students had 2 weeks to work on it. They worked on it mostly at home but I gave about 15 minutes a day inclass. On the last day the students had about 1 1/2 hours in class to finish.

I was in shock by how many students did not know how to build every day furniture out of recyclables. I had to sit

on my hands and bite my tongue as I witnessed one mess up after another go into the trash. The students were totally engaged and the finished products were awesome!
