writing ideas By Martha

This past year I began using writer's notebooks and a monthly writing calendar prompt sheet. Each night I would require the students to write in response to a selected prompt on their sheet. Each morning I would allow students| to share their writing if they wanted to and then on my break I would read the notebook entries and write short reponse in the books. The kids were eager for me to read their writing and I could personalize my responses in the notebooks. It was also easy for me to see what each student needed to work on and encourage them to focus on that area in the next nights writing. My parents | | knew that their child would have a writing prompt every night to do(except weekends and holidays) and the daily writing allowed the students to practice all year long on their writing skills.I also had a better assessment for each child by reading their writing each day. Those very poor writers were given extra help by student interns, parents and tutors using the writings they had in these writer's notebooks.
