I agree that paddling is barbaric but yes, they do still employ this as a last option - after parents are called. It's not against the laws here-yet. In fact, this past school year I came to a situation in an interim where the principal wanted me to paddle a child. I told her that I do not believe in that sort of punishment and that I would find a way to correct his behavior. I called a conference and began behavior management, which did improve the child's behavior and I NEVER paddled him. However, when a position came open at this same school, I didn't get the job. (By the way "here" is Southeast USA.) I need a job (my certification could run out) but how do I face such opposition?
