If you can't fix it - feature it

As a member of our elementary school's campus advisory team and a parent of a second grader, I can share with you a few of insights:
1. Every other parent probably knows what a pain both the child and the mother are.
What they says has little weight.
2. Reach out early to the parents this year. Lead with the fact that you are new, but let them see how much you love your job and how much you love the kids. Invite them to drop in and observe any time they want (Most won't, but the offer will send a strong message)
3. Deal with problem children early and do not back down. Parents complain more
about teachers that allow a few students to disrupt the whole class for everyone else than they do about a teacher that may be a little too early to use discipline.
4. If you hear of gossip, go right to the source. They will most assuredly back down and you will earn their respect. If they don't back down, start the formal process to have the child removed from school. If that does not get the parents attention, then nothing will.
5. Make sure the principal is VERY supportive and engage them early with any confrontation.

I hope this helps. Keep the faith and good luck this year.
