I'm a new teacher, recent grad, just got my first job...so I can't give you much advice....only comments.
There was a mention about having books for each child. I student taught in a classroom where there were no textbooks,
no individual desks, & it was meant to be that way! It's called center based learning. The school housed pre-school (spec ed) to only 3rd grade and they whole building was NAEYC certified and followed NAEYC rules. Interesting experience. Proved to me that books aren't necessary, just willing & open teachers and eager students.

To get another's point of view on city/urban teaching,

I suggest reading "Educating Esme" by Esme Raji Codell (Algonquin Books of Chapell Hill, NC). It's a diary of her first year teaching in a "touch section" of Chicago. Very interesting to read about the challenges she faced as a new teacher.
