Modifications may be needed should be listed in the child's IEP. Try to arrange a meeting with the sped teacher to get some specific information. You may also want to talk to the parents or even set up a meeting with the| parents and the child to discuss this. Don't approach this as having a "Tourette's child". It's better to just talk about "What do I need to know to help Susie do well in my class?" I really like to meet and talk with the student about his/her needs because I think it helps the student be more comfortable approaching me throughout the year. As far as the other students, has she been | | attending this school for a while? If so, ask her if she thinks you need to say anything. If she is new to the school, ask her how she wants to handle it. If she wants to talk about it herself, try just setting up some "getting to know each other" activities and letting it be a part of one of them. If she wants you to talk to them, ask her what she wants you to say and whether or not she wants to be in the room. She may not want you to say anything. I would respect her wishes, after all, she is the expert on herself! :-)
