Projects
By Beth Barlow

Clip to ScrapBook
Using projects is a form of authentic assessment that I used last year during my internship year. For example: My fifth graders studied about how coal forms, how it is removed from the earth, what happens to the earth after
it has been mined, etc. Afterwards, the students created a newspaper article including: a fictional story (article) about their experiences as a coal miner (including info about the formation of coal, the steps of coal mining and the importance of reclaiming the land afterwards), a few drawn pictures of the coal mining experience, and a pictograph representing how many coal deposits
found and where. The project was very beneficial in the assessment process. I could easily read the stories and assess if the students actually understood the lesson, as well as, their writing skills, and pictographs.
In closing, I think well planned projects are a wonderful form of assessment.
