Trade books By Mary Beth Keen

Perhaps, and this is just a suggestion, you should teach your skills and vocabulary on no more that three or four of the chapters in the trade book. Then, the children can read the inbetween chapters freely over a day or| two. Then they might use their writing journal to share their favorite part of the chapters they read independently, or they could illustrate their favorite scene in some way. Then, you might have a sharing day for them to share what they have read. This way they spend more time reading than working on sometimes very tedious skill instruction and vocabulary work. Of course you would | | have to read the whole book ahead of time and decide on the best chapters to use to teach skills and vocabulary. I don't know if this helps, but I have done this often and it helps the kids to enjoy the reading more. Try it and see if it works. I know how you feel about sucking the fun out of a novel by taking so long on skills.
