Clip to ScrapBook
For the past few years we have sent a large, blank postcard (5X7)to our 3rd graders. We print a message welcoming them to the new year, request supplies to bring (or NOT bring ) ask students to bring a favorite book to share with the class the first day. Also, we ask them to draw a picture about their summer or a favorite thing to draw on the opposite side and bring that back the first day. You can see right away their drawing skills and who is responsible to bring it. The students seem to enjoy this. It becomes the first item in their art portfolio. Perhaps you can adapt it for first grade. Be sure to check with the postoffice about postage rates for various postcards...it varies by size.
