Homework Help
By Michelle

Clip to ScrapBook
You may see if there is another family member who can help. Another option is to refer this child to a volunteer organization such as Big Brothers program. You might also pair her with an older peer tutor for the last 20
or 30 minutes of the day to get her homework started.

You can try taping instructions for homework for her. If necessary, you can pick up an inexpensive tape player at a dollar store for $5 or $6. When I do this, I just flip the recorder on as I'm going over homework in class. I make sure I stand near it while I'm talking. The other kids don't have to know what's going on.

You

can also give Mom permission to initial the paper if the child has tried but was unable to do the work. That way, you know she tried, but she has an out when she just absolutely can't do something.

One other note, I know I expect my children to read with their parents each night. This might be a delicate issue with Mom, but if you contact your state library, you can ask about their audio library for the blind. People who are unable to read because of a physical difficulty or because of a learning disability are eligible to check out books. They have children's and adult's books, magazines, etc. If they request tapes of books she can take home from school, they could listen and follow along together.

Also, if the problem is that she just hasn't learned, have some material on hand about any adult literacy groups in your area. Sometimes a parent will open the door and you will be able to share some options with her. Don't volunteer or push, but be open to opportunities that present themselves.

One other thing -- be aware that this mom will not be able to read your notes that get sent home. Make tapes or phone calls to keep the lines of communication open.
