One other note, I know I expect my children to read with their parents each night. This might be a delicate issue with Mom, but if you contact your state library, you can ask about their audio library for the blind. People who are unable to read because of a physical difficulty or because of a learning disability are eligible to check out books. They have children's and adult's books, magazines, etc. If they request tapes of books she can take home from school, they could listen and follow along together. Also, if the problem is that she just hasn't learned, have some material on hand about any adult literacy groups in your area. Sometimes a parent will open the door and you will be able to share some options with her. Don't volunteer or push, but be open to opportunities that present themselves. One other thing -- be aware that this mom will not be able to read your notes that get sent home. Make tapes or phone calls to keep the lines of communication open.
