Clip to ScrapBook
Hi there! I am also a new teacher. I will not be teaching language arts but am great friends with a wonderful teacher who does. She was in a similar situation. We worked together to locate books (cheap, usually only 1.99)
to get the ball rolling and break the ice. They are entitled Lateral Thinking Puzzles. They are wonderful. We also use them in a variety of homerooms at the middle school in my hometown. Another really fun way of breaking the ice is what my Professor called Wordles. These are word games, (many can be found on the internet searching Word Games). I'm sure you are familiar with them.
Draw a box on the board. Inside write this as an example.

Draw two dice on the board
Then have the kids guess what
word you are illustrating.

PARADISE (pair of dice)

There are hundreds of them. Draw two rows of linking chains. One one row, leave out one link.
What's the words? The missing link.

The kids really love this stuff.

Write the word apple on the board but write it upside down. What's the word? Apple turnover.

Get it?! Good luck. Hope this helps.
