Why would they tell you that? Every grade has its positives and negatives, and fourth grade is no different. I student taught fourth grade, and I just accepted my first teaching job teaching fourth. I love the kids- they're
maturing, but are still so innocent! They are able to really start thinking on a higher level, and you can do a lot with them. Sure, there are behavior problems like everywhere else, but I don't consider them any worse than any other grade!

The ONLY reason I can think of that you were told this is because of standardized tests. Out here in Texas my fourth graders not only have

to test in reading and math, like third and fifth do, but have to take a writing test. Maybe they don't think a new teacher should be responsible for that. When I student taught I was exposed to all of the tests, and even helped prepare the students for them, so I don't see the tests as a big deal.

As long as you feel comfortable with the material and the skills that they will be tested on, I see no reason for you to reject this job!
