I think I understand

I know Harry seems to be strict and quite frankly I am alot easier on my own kids that I imagine him to be. But my advice to new teachers is two fold. 1. Strict doesn't equate to mean...I know you've heard it 1,000 times,
but kids crave structure. and 2. You can always lighten up, but it's near impossible to tighten up once the class has been started. The number one thing I work with my new teachers is classroom managment and it most often comes down to them being the boss/teacher. A little thing like chewing gum in class can create a snowball that is a disaster...gum leads to popping and popping leads
to playing and playing leads to gum under the desk which leads to a complaining janitor which leads to rumors back to the principal.

Reading back over this I sound like the old lady teacher I never wanted to be, but it's my advice. I am a firm teacher, strict and enforce school and classroom rules, but my kids still love me and they do learn....I think kids would rather have a fair and firm teacher...they expect it.
