Second Grade Really RULES!!
By N.Coney

Clip to ScrapBook
I have been teaching second grade for two years. I love it!! The first days are pretty much the same for all grades. It is a must that you go over rules and procedures and inform the students of what is expected from them.
This should take place the first week or two. Until you feel sure the students know what is going on. From personally experience I have learned that second grade is kind of like a review "grade". I found myself reteaching what had been learned in K-1. So based on your kindergarten experience it should be a breeze for you. I would advise you to talk with some first grade teachers. GOOD
LUCK and I know that you are going to have a great year, because second grade really ROCKS!!!

P.S I teach in Georgia and some of the things that I covered in my class included: counting and recognizing money and its worth (adding and subtracting money) multiplication, time, two digit adding and subtracting, problem-solving, three-digit adding and subtracting, measurement (inches, liters, gallons, quarts, cups etc.) I found that second grades had problems writing complete sentences. I gave homework each night (not Fridays) I took one-two grades a week in each subject. I allowed my students to have a lot of say so on what on in the classroom and this allowed us to have a wonderful working environment.
