Second grade needs procedures taught to them, just as kindergarteners. We go over & over them. I wait until things are a definite 'routine' before I really start teaching.
I do weekly homework, which goes home Monday
& is returned on Friday. It consists of a reading log & various practice pages...things students can do on their own.
Second graders LOVE schedules. Make sure to post one each day.
Academics...in writing we concentrate A LOT on complete sentences (capital letters & punctuation). Also get going on paragraphs, once sentences are accomplished. Math is full of the number facts
to 19 & regrouping for addition & subtraction. Reading--depends on your curriculum. Lots of reading response activities. WE make a lot of class books..like I'm sure you do in Kndg. also.
These are just some random ideas. HOpe it helps!
