    Hey,
I just finished my first year of teaching 5th grade. Even though your coming from a lower level grade, 5th graders are still little kids just some of them are in adult bodies! They love to do art projects like any second grader. I had 4 classes of about 29 each, so I did a bulletin board made up of flowers. Each student drew their hand on a peice of construction paper, and on the thumb they wrote their favorite color; next finger, favorite food, etc. You could do anything really, just to get to know the students. The hands then became the pedals to the flowers.I had 4 flowers, one for each class. I also made up a questionaire for them to answer questions about themselves. Another thing to focus on is classroom management. It is really important to have strict rules and consequences in the beginning! I learned that one the hard way. So this year, I'm giving my homeroom a sheet that asks them "What makes a good student?" "What makes a bad student?" What makes a good teacher or bad teacher?" 5th graders love it when you ask them of their opinions, it makes them feel like "young adults." I also made a word search with each of their names in it on Puzzlemaker.com. They could not figure out how I did that. I always thought that I wanted to teach 1st or second grade myself, but fifth graders are so much fun, and you'll also enjoy that you can really do more with them! Good luck!
