parent volunteers By KT

I use my volunteers in a variety of ways in 3rd grade, but mostly 1:1. I send home a short volunteer note early in the years to get an idea of their interests, talents, and whether they would like to work with kids, clerical,| at home, 1:1, small groups, whole group etc. I use that info. but if they have no preference I have them call kids up 1:1 to correct work that needs to be redone, introduce a new concept or learning kit, practice telling time, flashcards for math or language skills such as guide words. etc. Some kids do not get this type of help at home. Some kids just need a buddy to help them stay |
| on task. As I correct papers after school or in the evening I collect papers in a folder for any parent who has time to pull kids up to do corrections. Inside the folder I have a note to parents about the procedure and a reminder to be professional and any student's progress is private information NOT to be discussed outside the classroom. I find parents to be receptive to this advice and for some it needs to be said. The more you start using parents the more you will discover what they can do for you. Use them in ways that you and they are comfortable with and will benefit the kids. Some parents like to help but their help is sometimes best used away from their own child. You just have to feel it out. Good luck.
