Start by checking in your area if there is a place to get recyclable items eg empty plastic mayonaise jars for storing items. Start going to Goodwill and the Salvation Army Thrift Stores weekly to get stuff like blocks, books, posters, etc. for very cheap prices. Put an ad in your local paper or swap and sell magazines asking if someone has classroom materials to share or get rid of. I put an ad once asking for old dictionaries and thesauruses and got about ten replies. Sometimes when I went to pick the stuff up they gave me other stuff while I was there. Be ready to send a list home with the kids on the first day; parents like to help new teachers get started. Do you have any nieces or nephews who have outgrown books, games or toys? Keep your eyes open... Start collecting bottle caps, acorns, pine cones, all these make good counters. Ask your relatives to save things too. Envelopes from ads in the mail... Stamps...One warning: don't go crazy and spend tons of your own money! Look for free things and cheap things first! Good luck!
