Role sheets
By Steve

Clip to ScrapBook
In "Literature Circles: Voice & Choice in the Student Centered Classroom" Harvey Daniels outlines 8 (or more) roles, of jobs that the students perform in their lit. circle group. I only use 6 in my groups. The role sheets look like a worksheet, but the are not. They are a place for students to record their ideas about the role they are completing for that particular meeting. They allow the student to read with purpose and provide a scaffold for their development of a natural discussion of literature. Ultimately, the students will be able to do away with the role sheets and have natural discussions about books they are excited about, just like experienced readers do.
