This was my first year as a second grade teacher and yes it has changed since we were in school. In Math, you need the base ten blocks or snap cubes for place value. These are also helpful when you do regrouping in addition as well. In Science, we did a lot of experiments with weather and plants. We also did a unit on animals in which students did a small report which we helped them with (basically we gave them an outline to follow and fill in). In Language Arts, we learned about sentences and how to write them, as well as the parts of a sentence (noun, verbs, adjectives). We also did | | parts of a story and did used graphic organizers to do book reports. A lot of these sheets can be found on freeworksheets.com and other web sites on the net that let you print things for free. In Social Studies,we focused on communities and local cities since this is in the NY State Standards. In Spelling, we did lots of things such as initial medial and final sounds. We did diagraphs, suffixes, r-controlled vowels, vowel pairs, and much more. Some trade books I used for Reading were simple chapter books such as the Arthur series by Marc Brown. I also started the year with Little Bill books by Bill Cosby. We did alot of books by Patricia Reilly Giff and Jonathon London as well. Also this age level seems to like the Magic Tree House series too. I hope this helps you and good luck. If you get Scholastic or Troll books at your school, you can use the bonus points to buy a lot of your trade books. If not, go to half.com and try searching for used books. They are usually in good condition and you don't pay a lot except for the shipping/handling.
