An eclectic approach

Balanced literacy is the key to teaching reading. A good reading teacher will combine whole language and phonics based principles. Reading aloud is invaluable. Have you tried guided reading and literature circles? Kids need to read on their independent level everyday and not just use the basal for the entire class. Try reading books by authors Sharon Taberski(On Solid Ground), Gay Su Pinnell (Guided Reading) and Shelly Harwayne. They were invaluable references to me when I transitioned from 5th grade to 2nd grade. Best of luck to you!! Any teacher who's willing to learn and explore different methods has a heart of gold!
