We just had a Family Day Celebration in our second grade rooms. It was a culmination of our "grandparent Unit", but not every child had a grandparent to invite. Perhaps you can incorporate some of our "activities". The children had serveral options to do with their guests. Teachers were not involved, it was all child led: share favorite programs on the classroom (& Library) computers, a venn diagram comparing what their guest did as a child & what they do, tour the school building, make a family tree using fill in the blank templates, make a paper bag puppet, & of course "snacks". We kept it to just an hour and things went well. Hope this gets you started!
