You need to contact your Dept. of Ed. By Carolyn

I think the certifications vary by state and their individual requirements. I received certification in Pennsylvania back in 1985. I wasn't required to take the NTE (now Praxis), but, beginning in 1987 new teachers were.| In PA, we had Early Childhood certification--K-3--and Elementary K-6 (also including 6-8 if it's a middle school). When I came to NC, I was a veteran teacher, but I had to take the Elementary Education NTE and the Professional Knowledge section of the NTE, because I had not taken it before. I became certified to teach K-6 in North Carolina, and my Pennsylvania Reading Specialist certificate | | was accepted. Unlike Pennsylvania, there is a special certification to teach middle grades in North Carolina. Teachers with middle school certification cannot teach beyond grade 9. In South Carolina, where I now teach, I am not able to teach Kindergarten, since I do not possess an Early Childhood certificate. I am allowed to teach 1-6. South Carolina did not give me certification in Reading. I would have to take a test to receive that certification. AS I said before, it seems as if your individual state education department decides this.
