Congratulations on being proactive about your son's reading comprehension. First of all, get books that are at or slightly below his reading level (a good children's librarian at the public library should be able to help).| Next, and this is a biggie...make sure they are books that HE WANTS TO READ. Find out what he's interested in. Very often, boys are only interested in non-fiction. Fine. Let him read just non-fiction. Have him do an exercise called Read, Cover, Remember, Retell. Have him read a section of text that is just big enough to cover with his hand. Cover up the text just after reading | | it, then think for a moment about what he read. then have him retell what he just read in his own words. I swear this exercise is almost magic. Have him do it a couple of times a day. Good luck! There are more things "out there" that you can do, but this one is simple and cheap and it works.
