Clip to ScrapBook
KT is right about reading to children. I read to my children practically from birth. And I just finished reading Mary Stewart's The Crystal Cave with my 14 year old.

Along with this wonderful advice I would add that
no single way of teaching reading will work for every child. While the pendulum of popular opinion swings between programs like "whole language" and "phonics only" most experienced teachers I know use a variety of techniques to help children learn how to read. I've come to believe that it isn't the exact program that matters as much as the teacher's careful instruction of every student,
checking for mastery of various reading skills and remediating when necessary. Right now there's a lot of buzz about "balanced literacy" which uses the tactics of a variety of approaches. And certainly I would support this. But as with any technique, the thing that makes it work is a trained, caring teacher.
