teaching reading
By KT

Clip to ScrapBook
My experience over 28 years has shown me that probably the most powerful way to teach children to want to read is to be sure you read aloud to them each and every day..or several times a day if possible...at ALL grade levels.
Chose high interest stories with delightful vocabulary and books related to your studies that are your favorites.(also newspaper articles etc.) Your enthusiasm for a great book will carry into all your reading "lessons". I encourage parents to read to their children for pleasure TOTALLY SEPARATE from listening to their children read. This concept is sometimes hard for parents to grasp
especially once their children can read. I highly recommend Jim Trelease's The Read Aloud Handbook for all teachers, parents and parents to be! If you ever get a chance to hear him speak...Go! He travels all over the country and is sometimes free sponsored by local school groups etc. Have fun reading to your kids.
