kindergarten registration
By Julianne

Clip to ScrapBook
Registration was broken into two parts at our school. The parents came alone to hear the teachers and support staff talk about what to expect and to fill out the paper work. On a separate Friday afternoon we held an open
house for parents to let their children visit our classrooms. This way the parents weren't distracted by their children while doing the adult parts and the kids weren't bored to tears by our grown-up meeting.

At the kid part we set our classrooms up as they are when the new kids show up. We put out materials the kids could play with and had copies of our schedule on the board for

parents. Since parents didn't know which classroom their child would be in they could visit all three.

At the parent meeting one of our teachers always gave a talk about the "Three R's of Summer Learning" for pre kindergarten kids. These were things a parent should do with their child during the summer before kindergarten.

First was Rhyme, Rhythm and Repetition. Parents should teach their child rhymes, sing songs, point out the rhythms in language, and repeat all these things endlessly.

Second was Rest, Relax, Run. Kids need a chance to rest and recuperate during the summer. And they need plenty of exercise.

Last was Read, Read, Read - The best advice to any parent who wants to raise a reading child.
