I like the previous suggestions, and would add: Get the parents involved once you've decided what will be done to make restitution, etc. Not getting them involved at the fourth grade level denies good parents the opportunity to reinforce and reteach the lesson at home as well, and lets other parents off the "teaching values at home" hook too easily. But make the decision what will be done about it first, it's your classroom. Also, I would think hard before making the child apologize in front of the class. Make sure he/she is regretful and apologetic, not humiliated...
