Shurley
By Jean

Clip to ScrapBook

I taught in a school for one and a half years that used the Shurley method of English instruction. In addition to what you mentioned the lower grades also learn songs and chants to find part of speech in sentences.
The system comes with colorful posters to help students learn and reinforce the jingles. The student workbook allows students to locate sentence parts on the top with additional practice on the bottom. I enjoyed teaching with the program, but I also had students use the Shurley method using their library book. The school I teach in presently does not use the Shurley method, but I
have continued to teach the students the jingles to memorize parts of speech. It seems to help. I enjoyed teaching using this method of instruction and the students did well with it also.
