Definately look at yard sales. This is how I began to acquire books for my classroom. If you let people know you are a new teacher, they will often give you a great deal on the books. I even had someone give me a whole bag for free! You can finds lots of other great stuff at yard sales, too. I have bought many games, toys, puzzles and art supplies this way.

Also, when you start teaching, I recommend joining a book club (Carnival 2000 is my favorite). When I send home the forms, I attach a small piece of paper that states "Your book order helps our class buy new books, tapes, software, etc...My book orders have increased greatly by adding this!

One last idea: let the parents of your new students know you are adding to the classroom library. They will often donate books their children have outgrown. I have a few parents that still come back to me year after year and ask if I want their child's old books, games, or puzzles. Of course, I always say yes (and write a thank-you card)!

    Good Luck!
