Check yard and garage sales. This is a good time of year for them. People sell them very cheaply (25,50,75 cents) when the children outgrow them. Also Goodwill and stores like that. Another source, although not quite as cheap but cheaper than new, is ebay. You can get group lots of books for not very much at all. This should get you started! :o)
