Math in Washington
By Cheryl

Clip to ScrapBook
I have taught 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades in Washington for 12 years. Districts have adopted various math curriculums, but algorithms are taught the same as they have always been. Students are taught the processes and are
then required to demonstrate their understanding by solving problems which require them to apply what they have learned to solve a problem. They must be able to explain clearly and concisely the steps they took to solve the problem and how they know their answer is correct. The state tests are called the Washington Assessment of Student Learning, and yes, they are administered at 4th,
7th, and 10th grades, but ALL grade levels need to focus on these skills in order for children to succeed. The district I am in uses Open Court Real Math for grades 3-5, with Marilyn Burns Math Solutions and Creative Problem Solver as adopted supplements. We are going through a math adoption now and are focusing on programs that have a lot of hands on problem solving, with manipulatives. Good luck on your job search!
