Alternative certification
By Nina

Clip to ScrapBook
Dear vbangura,

I live in Denton, Texas and have applied for alternative certification (my degree is in Spanish - I want to teach bilingual ed). The progam is called Education Career Alternatives Program (ECAP), contact
Sharon Fikes or Charwynne Hazlewood at P.O. Box 162179 Fort Worth, TX 76161-2179 or call at (817) 222-3494 or fax (817) 222-3324.
This is the deal: you pay $3000 to get certified (Denton ISD takes it out of your first year's salary in one big chunk instead of some amount every month so you don't actually feel it); 5 Saturdays out of the term you attend intensive training classes
(I heard ESL is the hardest test to pass) and 4 over the summer. Here in Denton training begins on June 11....the deadline for the application is April 30, 2001. There is a $20 application fee. You don't have to have any ed courses - according to the person I spoke with at ECAP. These are the areas one could seek certification:
Elementary Pk-6
Bilingual/Elementary Pk-6
ESL Pk -12
Special education Pk-12
Secondary content areas (ie sociology) 6-12
Vocational areas requiring a bachelor's degree 6-12

Good luck!
