Wow..I can't imagine what I'd do in such a situation. I think I'd be very torn on whether to join the strikers or not. I mean, my purpose in going into teaching is to educate the kids. If, when I begin to teach, teachers go on strike, my kids are no longer getting the education that I think they deserve. Instead they fall behind and through the cracks. On the other hand, bills do need to get paid and food needs to get on the table. Getting paid less than we deserve is a very good reason to go on strike. We put in long hours (We are teachers 24-7 not just 5 days a week for 40 hours). We put up with kids that, sorry to say, some parents don't discipline and, in turn, who we have to deal with all day. With, all this, nobody seems to appreciate teachers and nobody seems to want to give them their fair due. Perhaps this is a reason we as teachers need a union. Other professions have unions, but we don't. Why is that? Sigh...Anyway, as far as money concerns and being idle, perhaps you should take on a part-time job. YOu could work in a day-care or even, dare I say it, wait tables. Just until the strike is over. At least you'll have something to cover the bills with. Gosh, I hope it all goes well for you. I am definitely over here in GA supporting you. Good luck
