I try to integrate novel things within a lesson of facts. For instance, an unusual picture that connects to the lesson helps children to have something curious to hold onto in their brain along witht he facts. Also I use
music. I create lyrics about topics to common songs and melodies. My students never forget the continents of the world because of my "There are Seven" song. We also have a song about the Water Cycle which is to the melody of " Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head".
Another good way to increase retention is through a repetitive game such as "Zip Around" games. You can challenge the students

to work together to call out facts from their cards to match with others in the class. While they are doing this they are drilling themselves on the information you want them to know. This type of game can be commercially bought, however after you know how to play one of them you can make your own versions tailored to the information you are teaching. It pays to purchase one of them, found in a teacher store, and then you can see the endless possibilities for your own games.
