I do quite a lot of group work, somethimes pairs or putting 3 or 4 in a group together, but on a day to day basis, we are to have them in rows. It does, as many of you have pointed out, cures some of the talking and classroom disruption. When I was in one college class we talked a lot about classroom environment and how to set up a room for the best learning environment. I agree that nice neat rows of 6 students each isn't always the best learning environment. When you are told, however, that having students face each other from across the room makes it difficult for you to assist them and see whats going on, you change it to suit the administration.
