parts of speech
By Sharon

Clip to ScrapBook
First, I would suggest reteach the basic concept ie "an adjective is a word that describes a noun." Give examples that will make them laugh or relate to them. I usually put the word ugly on the board. Pick an object in
the room and have them use single words to describe that object. Ask the question: "What part of speech are all those words you just gave me?"

Secondly, play the CD "School House Rock" on the parts of speech. School House Rock also has a computer game out for grammar. I haven't checked this one out yet, but I hear the kids love it.

Play Madlibs!

As far as pronouns. Once again

review that a pronoun is used to substitute the particular noun and explain why we use them. Also give examples of pronouns and explain when we use which ones. Then give a wrong example. We wouldn't say "Her wants the bike."

Linking verbs: Practice practice practice! Have students cut out links of a chain from construction paper. Each chain link, links to linking verb.

You can also write sentences on the board and play a game. Row one has twenty seconds to run up to the board and correctly label each word in the sentence. Keep doing this with the different rows. Give points +1 if it is all labeled correctly or -1 if it is not. After each row gets a turn, repeat this making the sentence more difficult.

Hope this helps,
Sharon
