summary steps
By Sharon

Clip to ScrapBook
I would suggest taking it in tiny baby steps. Give them a paragraph and give multiple choice questions, much like reading comprehension questions. Later give a paragraph, and have them fill in the blank. Then give them
a paragraph, and have them write a sentence or two on what the topic was about. From there, you can give them several paragraphs and have them write their own paragraph summing it up. Keep taking small steps until you get to single books and them proceed to larger books. Give them a step by step book report. Give the students a certain amount of time to choose a book. Next step is
they have a certain amount of time to write a summary. Go over each summary individually and give your suggestions. Have them write summaries in class all the time. This way, they can ask you a question if the need arises. while they do the book reports and summaries at home, they have constant reinforcement in the class room. The step by step process prevents all the problems of one sentence reports, late reports, i don't understand excuse, etc. It can last for years to come for they will not be overwhelmed with the "big picture." they will produce better quality work.
