Funny you should mention that. I was ready for a room change and asked my students what they would like (4th grade). Believe it or not, they wanted to be in pairs all facing the board--traditional, yes, but they said they were tired of groups and wanted their own space. I have to tell you, we have been like this for close to a month and they are happy, productive, more attentive, and the noise level has decreased. We still move the desks for cooperative activities, etc. Ask them what they would like--you might be surprised.
